Beatnik Sweater update. The front is finished! I'm about a third of the way done with the back. I've decided to make the back in plain stockinette stitch instead of the cable design. I think this is going to be one cozy sweater.

Beatnik Sweater Part 3

I've been working on Beatnik off and on...I like how it's turning out but it is a very slow process. Each row has 3 cable sections as you can see by my pretty green stitch markers, so alot going on here. I think I might only do the front like this and just do the back in plain stockinette.

And in between this project and shop orders I've added a new hat or two to my shop...

Beatnik Sweater Part 2

Gauge swatch is complete. I cast on and started to do the 1x1 Twisted Rib and then...decided to make my first modification. While I like the look of the twisted rib, I loath 1x1 rib and it would've taken me twice as long to do it this way so I left the first row as twisted and then switched to regular 1x1 rib. The edge still has that nice twist at the bottom. Now comes the fun part...the color coded charts.

A Beatnik Sweater For Me!

After a crazy, hectic, fingers-aching first holiday season of my Etsy shop, I get asked all the time if I still enjoy knitting. The answer is a resounding YES! Since starting my shop back in January of 2011, I haven't knit anything for myself so I decided to take advantage of some downtime by starting a sweater project. I have tried over the past 10+ years of knitting to make one sweater a year. I am an inpatient knitter and I usually enjoy instant gratification with smaller projects, but I have been longing to make this sweater for so long, now is the perfect time. I chose a cornflower blue color and a machine washable yarn to knit this in.

I love this sweater! It just makes me want to wear it and cuddle up with a hot cup of tea and a book.

Bells-A-Ringing

I know, I know, it's not even Halloween yet but I can hear sleigh bells in my head already. Ever since I began knitting, I've always liked to give something hand knit as Christmas presents. I have given hats and scarves to nieces and nephews, but my favorite thing to give away is hand knitted Christmas ornaments. I've done mini knitting baskets with teeny tiny skeins of yarn in them and toothpicks as knitting needles. I've also done clear glass round ornaments filled with mini hanks of yarn. I like to use scrap leftovers from my expensive hand dyed sock yarns for these. I think my favorite ornaments though are mini sweaters and mini mittens. They are just so adorable hanging on a tree or a mantle garland. These would be great to add to a plain wreath also.

DIY Drawstring Muslin Bags

So I've been working on a special order of wedding shawls for a customer and I was thinking what can I do to package these shawls extra special that won't add to0 much to my cost. I came up with putting each shawl in it's own cotton muslin drawstring bag. And then to add my personal touch, I printed a new shop logo design on iron on fabric and ironed them onto the front side of each bag.

These bags would make great "wrapping" for handmade gifts, especially for the upcoming holiday season. Instead of a logo, you could iron on the person's name.

Here is what I did:

I started out with about a 32 inch (length) by 36 inch (width) piece of natural muslin (which I got on sale for $1 a yard). I folded this big piece in half lengthwise, then cut this big piece into 4 pieces, each about 16 inches long by 9 inches wide. I made my bags longer as opposed to wider or square, but you could easily make these as big or as little as you'd like.

Next, I cut out the logos I had printed on iron on paper and ironed them on the front side of each bag.

I then sewed up the sides and folded over the top to create a casing for the drawstring and sewed that around leaving an open space to pull the ribbon I used through for the drawstring.
I pulled the ribbon through using a safety pin and tied both ends together to secure.

These are quick and easy to make and give any gift or handmade item a special touch.

Handmade Wednesday

Today I have a simple pattern for some reusable face cloths/face scrubbies. I use these every night when I wash my face and they are great. I use cotton yarn and they knit up super quick and the best part is they are machine washable so you can use them over and over.

Cast on 8 to 10 stitches. Knit in garter stitch, (knit every row), for 8 to 10 rows. Bind off and weave in ends. That's it.

Give it a try. This is a great use too for using up scrap cotton yarns too.

Favorite Fall Comfort Food

Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year.I look forward to bundling up in layers, wrapping up in a soft cushy scarf and gloves. I also look forward to making some of my must have, leaves falling, cold weather, comfort food. I bake more in the fall. I love filling my home with scents of cinnamon and nutmeg, apples and pumpkin. I have a new recipe for Pumpkin Bread that I just love and I'm going to share it with you. Please give it a try and let me know how you like it.

Angela's Pumpkin Walnut Bread

2 cups flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg*
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/2-3/4 cup milk
2 eggs
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of the flour, the brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, and nutmeg. Add pumpkin, milk, eggs and oil.Beat until well blended, about 2 minutes. If mixture is too thick, add another 1/4 cup of milk. It should be a little thicker than pancake batter, but not as thick as bread dough. Add remaining flour. Stir in nuts.Pour into a greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 60 - 65 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes. Remove from pan and cool completely. Wrap and store overnight before slicing.

*If you can find fresh nutmeg, please try it. It is so worth it. My loaf was eaten so fast, I didn't get a photo of it. Next time, maybe. :D

On Saturday I attended my very first YarnCon in Chicago and it was glorious! I met the organizers and they were super friendly and total fiber junkies just like me. I volunteered to help at the show and "booth sat" for the lovely and talented Allyson from The Sweatshop of Love for a little bit and then I spent the rest of the afternoon touching, feeling, and being in awe of so many beautiful yarns and fibers and so much more. I have been to other fiber fairs, but this is a special one because a lot of the vendors are local "indie" yarn dyers and artists. I am so excited to find some really unique yarns to create truly one of a kind designs for my shop.

Yarn Yarn Everywhere

I have been very busy planning new designs and accruing ball after ball of yarn. It is slowly taking over my dining room and part of my living room. I have lived in a very small house for a long time so I've become somewhat of a master at blending my yarn stash into my decor but it is becoming more and more difficult, lol.

I am enjoying the start of Autumn in Chicagoland as well. Cooler days, leaves turning...it is my favorite time of the year. I tried my hand at making some felted bowls with the idea of having some candy corn in them, I must practice some more as felting is much more of an art than a science. Once you've knitted your piece, you're never quite certain of how the felting will turn out. You can see the bowl in my dining room along with my branch of fall leaves and jar of suckers...

Why Wool?

I think wool has gotten a bad rap. I thought I'd give some information about wool and explain it's great many benefits.

Wool is a natural fiber. Each year sheep produce a new fleece, making wool a renewable fiber source.
Wool has the ability to regulate body temperature by keeping you warm when you are cold but releasing heat and moisture when you are hot.
Wool has a large capacity to absorb moisture vapour next to the skin making it extremely breathable.
Wool has a naturally high UV protection.
Wool fibers have a natural protective layer which prevents stains from being absorbed.
Wool is naturally fire retardant.
Wool fiber can be bent 20,000 times without breaking and still return to it's natural shape.

I hope I've explained the benefits of wool and why it's the best choice for hats, scarves, mittens and gloves. Wool lasts pretty much forever and can be passed down from generation to generation. The only difference in washing these items is that they need to be hand washed unless they are knit with "superwash" wool. Hand washing is easy but a little more time consuming than machine wash. Hand knits should be washed in barely lukewarm water with no agitation, twisting or wringing. A small amount of mild soap should be used and then rinsed in the same lukewarm water temperature. The best way to dry hand knits is to lay them flat on a towel and gently roll up the towel to absorb the excess water. Then lay the knit flat to dry completely.

A Little WCK Bio and A New Hat!

I was filling out a questionnaire for an upcoming blog feature about my background and I thought I'd share a little about me and my knitting background.

I've always loved all different crafts, sewing, crochet, jewelry, but I didn't start knitting until about 11 years ago. A friend showed me how to cast on and make a knit stitch and then I taught myself everything else from books and online tutorials.
I work part time at a retail store and I care for my two daughters the rest of the time. I do my best to work on my Etsy shop while they're in school so I can spend time with them and not have knitting needles in my hands, lol. My inspiration comes from the yarns I use and nature. I love picking up a skein of yarn, studying the texture and color and thinking about seasonal colors around me. Living in Chicago, where in the winter it can drop below zero with the wind chill, I definitely design and create knitted pieces that are functional too. My advice to shops just starting is to be patient and get involved with teams because they are full of other artisans who have so much great advice and are there to help.

Strawberry Jam and a Messy Knitting Basket

Well, I tried my hand at water bath canning and made some strawberry jam. I used this book,
Canning & Preserving with Ashley English as my guide. What a fantastic book! Very picture heavy, which is exactly what I needed. I have always been afraid to try canning, partly because I wouldn't do it right and make a bunch of people sick. Well, my fears have been alleviated, I feel like I can "can" anything now! Ok, maybe not anything but I feel a lot more comfortable with the process. Truth be told, I haven't actually eaten any of my jam because I just made it today and it has to sit for 24 hours, but it looks good and I heard pinging sounds when it was cooling so I think it sealed well. Official taste testing begins 7 am tomorrow with a toasted English muffin.

And just for good measure and keeping things knitting related around here, I took a photo of my messy neglected knitting basket. :D

I had such a crazy week last week, working until the wee hours of the morning a couple of days messed up my sleep and when that is messed up I am just no good. I did manage to finish a new hat design and knitted it in 3 color choices. I have also started making stitch markers that I will be adding to my shop soon along with some of my original designs for pdf downloads. I was so busy I even missed my Wordless Wednesday post so here are some pics for your viewing pleasure.

It's Been Awhile...

I can't believe it's been 2 months since I posted on here. Life has been busy:D

My WindyCityKnits Etsy shop has been doing well and I've added a few new designs. I'm taking some time now to knit for myself and I'm also designing some fall/winter knits as well. It's kind of hard to design warm wool knits in the summer but I'm trying to stay ahead of the game, ha:) I'm thinking of soft, warm, wool cabled mittens and hats and some convertible glove/mittens.

Really enjoying spending time with my girls and the sunshine. I've also been trying to utilize my crafting skills around my home by sewing some napkins from my bottomless bin of scrap fabric and knitting reusable dish and wash cloths.     My newest passion is Organic Cotton. I have been doing some research on the subject and found many interesting facts. The cultivation of cotton dates back to prehistoric times. It has been spun, woven and dyed to cloth people since ancient times. Although cotton has been commercially produced using traditional farming methods for centuries, the use of pesticides and chemicals just like in commercially grown food crops took over. However, the return of organic farming has has allowed consumers a choice whether to wear clothing or use linens in our homes that are organic. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals.

Completed Twist Cardigan

I finished my Twist Cardigan. I love it!! I used Cascade 220 Heathers in a deep purple colorway. I'm wearing it right now and it is so comfortable. This pattern was super easy to follow and very well written. I would definitely knit it again, maybe trying the hooded version.

Yogurt Success!

The yogurt turned out really good! It's creamy and tangy but not as tangy as regular plain yogurt. I added a little honey and blueberries and it was delicious. I got about 10 cups worth.

Organic Cotton Knits

After a long winter (which still does not want to leave yet) of knitting with wool, it is so nice to work with a light, cushy, organic cotton yarn. I have some special gift sets coming to my shop soon.

Adventures in Yogurt Making

Today I am attempting to make yogurt in my crock pot. I was inspired to do this by Nourishing Days.
I'm a little nervous about the final product because the directions said to heat on low for 2 1/2 hours and the milk should be at 180 degrees. Well, I checked it after the allotted time and it was only 160 degrees. So I cranked up the pot to high for 30 minutes and then it reached 180. I hope I didn't ruin the whole thing. I guess the whole "yogurt making is an art not a science" adage is true. Now off to bed...dreaming of fresh yogurt with honey and blueberries in the morning...please.

City Summer Scarf

I can feel it...warmer weather is on the way here in beautiful Chicagoland. And with that said, I'd like to introduce "City Summer Scarf".

A gorgeous light and airy spring/summer scarf. I designed this scarf and hand knitted it in a rayon from bamboo and acrylic blend yarn that is extremely soft and has a slight shimmer.

Meet the Printer's Row Slouch, my newest design just added today! I am finally feeling human again after having the flu for over a week. I really love how this slouch turned out, it's so easy to wear and cozy. I used a dusty rose and rosewood color to start but check back because I have more colors coming soon.

Designing and Inspiration

I've been busy sketching and planning designs for my Etsy store while waiting for my materials to arrive. The weather has definitely given me inspiration too, in the last week we've had snow, rain, ice and wind. Warm stylish woolies are flying off the needles...

Also wanted to mention a new Etsy store, Colesky, with amazing photography. I am planning on a purchase very soon. :D
